Although the manufacture of essis dates back to the Middle Ages, initially for roofs and then for farm walls exposed to the elements, its great efficiency and durability mean that essis, these split wooden planks, are still part of the present, and even the future. Patrick Crouvezier with "La ramée vosgienne" has made it his profession.
Are shingles in the air? Long forgotten, shingles or shingles are now the stuff of dreams. In the Vosges, they are made from local wood; they require no treatment products; they consume practically no electricity because they are handmade; they produce zero waste because the shavings are reused as firelighters; they are durable since a row of shingles can last up to 100 years.
